Cannot change Search engine in Safari on MacBook Pro

I keep changing my search engine to google on safari on my MacBook Pro M1 updated to Monterey 12.4. even switched my homepage to google but anytime I put in a search entry and hit search. It will still open via yahoo for some reason. Even tried it by going to preferences > Search > Search engine but still refuses to use anything other than Yahoo.
