Equations alignment Keynote

I'm not sure when it changed, but in the past, Keynote (and Pages) would automatically align equal signs of equations when center alignment was specified, in a manner like below:

Now, it seems to yield a true center justification that looks like

Is there a way to return to aligning equal signs? Using tabs and spaces only provides a close approximation, but it's often enough off-alignment that it's quite evident. There are several instances where aligned equal signs are preferred, but using the AMS-LaTeX align environment in the equation editor does not allow for equations to be animated in the same way.

Thanks!

The following works correctly on Keynote versions 9.1 (High Sierra), 10.1 (Mojave), and 12.0 (Big Sur/Monterey):

\begin{aligned}

x^2 - 2x - 63 &= 0 \\
(x + 7)(x - 9) &= 0 \\
x &= -7,9

\end{aligned}

None of Pages, Numbers, or Keynote have a clue about LaTeX/MathML syntax without using the blahtex translator within the applications to convert the input syntax into an embedded MathML object. That blahtex translator is quite limited to what syntax that it will accept which is a dramatic departure from what a real TeX/LaTeX implementation (e.g. MacTeX 2022) permits.

Apple discussed the LaTeX/MathML equation capabilities/restrictions within these applications when the equation functionality was introduced in macOS Sierra:

I recommend that you obtain the blahtex PDF (linked in the above article) and keep that handy too.

I appreciate the detail in your response. Both the align and the aligned environments allow you to align equal signs, it's true. But I want to animate the build-in of each line and you cannot do that using these environments (which I alluded to in my initial post). For now I'll resort to masking the individual lines with rectangles and removing them one at a time.
