2021 iMac 24 inch, migrating and updating the Mac system

I understand that the new iMacs come with Big Sur. My question is that my current Mac mini M1 has Monterey OS so when I get the new machine and migrate will that be a problem and when would be the best time to update the OS on the new machine? I will be getting in the machine today.

Also, when you are ready to migrate PLEASE follow the steps in Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant. This is the easiest, quickest and most reliable method.

Actually, any new one you get will probably Monterey. The initial batch came out with Big Sur since Monterey had not yet been released.

If this was the case, I think it best to get the machine working with the OS that shipped with it, get it going to your satisfaction, back it up, and then upgrade the OS.

I will also point out that when you use Migration Assistant to transfer files from one computer to another the operating system is not transferred, only your preferences, files and apps (if selected to be transferred). It does not matter if the two computers have different operating systems.

Yes, connnect the old Mac's TM EHD to the new Mac prior to turning it on. Please note you likely will need an adapter to make the connection. I'm assuming the old Mac has all USB A or B connections. New Macs use USB C, this means you need a USB A to C adapter. One kind of like:

Well all is well and it is set up. Nice machine. I do need to figure out a USB Hub or dock to use that is cost effective while giving me more ports as I have the machine with 2 USB-c and 2 thunderbolt ports. I need more ports.

Anyone with some good ideas on ports.
