Setup and Use an External SSD as your Startup Disk on a Desktop Mac

I followed the instructions on this thread: How to Setup and Use an External SSD as y… - Apple Community but when I go to select the SSD drive to install macOS Monterey on it doesn't highlight it to continue.

The external SSD is formatted to what was narrated in the above thread.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.13

If the drive is not showing up then perhaps the format was not correct. You want APFS, GUID partition. I have better luck using Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable drive for an Intel Mac only (has issues with M1 and Monterey). Are you running Catalina or Monterey?
