Failing email / SMTP connection

I've been unable to send or receive emails as I'm getting a message that the SMTP connection to the server has failed. I may have changed something on my Mac by mistake, as it's a long-standing email account ( Virgin) and there are no other interconnectivity issues. Any advice?

Try deleting the account and re-adding?

We are pretty good however we have no idea what version of Mac OS is installed, the model year iMac you have or what troubleshooting you have attempted already and we laid off all of our mind readers when they did not renew their mind reading licenses.
