Restart your Mac in "Safe Mode" and try updating macOS while in that mode.

my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2019) will not update to latest software. It is currently running on Mac OS Big Sur and press "software update" it says "Checking for updates" and nothing happens. I had/have Auto update on but it never updated. My Mac software will not update, it freezes.
