My iMac shuts off randomly and will only reboot by removing power cord.

Will shut off randomly and will only reboot by removing power cord. Will not boot using power button. Was able to boot and holding down R to run hardware diagnostics and no problems found. This is on 2017 imac27 in i7

Try resetting the SMC a few times to see if that helps.

Desktop computers

  1. Shut down your Mac, then unplug the power cord.
  2. Wait 15 seconds, then plug the power cord back in.
  3. Wait 5 seconds, then press the power button to turn on your Mac.


If that does not help, then you should have the iMac checked for a bad Power Supply.
