If you want to use the old fashion method, simply connect the iPhone to the iMac using the cable that shipped with the iPhone. Open the Photos app on your iMac and import the photos you selected to your iMac.

On your iPhone in your iCloud settings. Turn Photos on with Optimise iPhone Storage

On your iMac go to About This Mac -> Storage -> Manage -> Store in iCloud and ensure that Photos is checked.

Now whenever you take a photo it will be uploaded to iCloud and it will be accessible on your iMac

Imacs have been made for 20+ years in hundreds of configurations so I have no idea which one you have. Iphones have been available since 2007 again in many configurations and cable connections. Please let me know the model year iMac you own and which iPhone too so I can answer that question.
