Search feature stops working, always returns 0 results.

Recently Apple's Mail app will periodically just stop finding search terms. I know I have emails from a particular sender, but if I type that sender's name or a search term other than a name, it returns "found 0 results". Anyone know how to fix this? I've tried quitting and restarting Mail.app. I've tried restarting my computer. No luck. Running macOS12.3 on 2021 MacBook Pro with M1 Max. Any help would be appreciated.

Search relies on Spotlight.

When it is not working it often helps to reset Spotlight. Type the following in Terminal to force Spotlight to rebuild:

sudo mdutil -E /

type the password blindly and press enter.

Give it some time to reindex.
