transferring files from icloud to hard drive on MacBook Air

My iCloud files are full but my hard drive on my MacBook Air is practically empty. How do I transfer files?

All of your iCloud files should already sync to your MacBook in iCloud Drive. System Preferences > Apple ID > iCloud
