transition to new desktop

I need to replace an older imac (Big Sur) with a new one or possibly with a macbook.

What is the easiest and/or best way to make the transition? Do I have to re-load all my non-Apple applications one-by-one onto the new machine?

Can I restore in entirety via Time Machine?

Note: the older imac with be put into use in a different setting and will be upgraded to Monterrey.

Use Migration assistant to transfer the data from the time machine backup of your old system to the new one.

Most applications should move just fine. Some 3rd party applications may have to be re-installed.
