Software update doesn't load

I am trying to update my iMac from Big Sur to Monterey. When I open System Preferences>Software Update the only thing that happens is I see the little gear next to "checking for update" rotate continuously and that's it. I have left it running for over 20 minutes but it seems to be stuck.

I have a good fiber optic internet connection so I don't think that is the problem. Plus everything else is working fine.

Any help or thoughts on this?

Thanks.

A few things to try

  • Uninstall all anti-virus and clean-up apps
  • If you are using a VPN, shut it down
  • Quit all running apps and try again
  • If still not progressing try restarting in safe mode and trying again
