If you see the subscription and tap on it, and only see options to renew, it has already been canceled.

I agree; it should be clearer. Suggest it to Apple: https://apple.com/feedback.
BTW, if you cancel a subscription it will still be active until the end of the period you have already paid for.
If the specific subscription does not show up in the App Store list, check the app's website or contact the developer for more help.
