Update from Sierra to Big Sur

My MacBook Air is stuck in 10.12.6. It is an early 2014 model which according to the apple website is compatible with Big Sur, however when I try to check for an update there is none available. So I went to the apple website to download from there and still cannot get Big Sur. What am I doing wrong and how can I update my MacBook Air?
