I can't get my AirTag to work

I got my air tag out of the box 2 or three months ago but I'm just now getting around to setting it up now that I have a holster. Do I need to recharge the air tag possibly? I know that when I first open the package it tried to connect to my phone but it was an extremely hectic day and I pushed ignore and ever since then I can't get it to try to connect to my phone again.

No. Charging shouldn't be an issue for new devices.
