Timemachine is asking me to erase data on the external drive. Why?

I am setting up time machine on an external drive which already has some other data, that I want to keep. But the time machine set up is asking me to erase the drive so it can be used for time machine. It is not giving me any other option. Why? The external drive has plenty and of free space in its 2 TB capacity. What can I do?
