Do I need the GMAIL app?

I am getting overwhelmed by emails from my Gmail account. Do I need the Gmail application in addition to the apple mail account

You can use either the Gmail app or the Apple Mail app. You don't need to use both. Personally I prefer the Gmail app and only use it, but that's just a personal preference.
