Connecting AirPods Gen 3

I'm trying to connect a Gen 3 AirPods to a 2015 iMac by holding the button on the back of the AirPods, but the light isn't turning white. Does this mean the AirPods can't pick up any devices to connect to? How do I connect my AirPods to the iMac?

Tech specifications:

iMac Software: Big Sur 11.6

iMac Hardware: iMac Late 2015

AirPods Hardware: Gen 3
