how do I stop the screen from moving side to side on my iMac?

That sounds like your screen, is slightly Zoomed in.
To Zoom back out, hold the Control key and scroll down until the screen returns to normal. Or... optionally, go to Apple > System Preferences > Accessibility > Zoom and uncheck "Use scroll gesture with modifier keys to zoom"
