I have had a similar issue happen this morning.

Last night, macbook pro (2018) was working without any issues. I closed the lid and unplugged like I always do. Used it this morning without issue (although I probably didn't see it yet). Saw it was getting low, so I decided to plug it in, no joy. No charge and it keeps draining (dead now).

If the cable is not plugged in, it still says cable is connected, but not charging. I have tried:

  1. SMC reset (multiple times)
  2. Using a different power circuit to rule out noise
  3. Used a different power adapter as we have a few macbooks (2018 and 2017).
  4. Now it drained completely, let it charge for a bit, still no joy.
  5. Let it charge for a while, still no joy.

Not sure if this was caused by the software update as I reset when it was giving issues, and then the software also updated.
