How do I restore without time machine?

I bought a new Macbook pro. My old Macbook was backed up on an external hard drive. I have been trying to recover all my old files and restore my backup but time machine does not see my backups from my old Macbook. How do I restore my information other than time machine? This is not working and I wish I would have used some other way to back up my old Macbook.
