Can't update from High Sierra (10.13.6)
When I try to update to Monterey, it says I can't do so because the destination (Macintosh HD) is a backup disc, but it is my hard drive. I have ~150 Gb available on it. What gives?

System Preferences>Time Machine...
See if there's a folder at the root of the drive called...
Backups.backupdb
Was it at one time chosen in Sys Prefs>Time Machine?
Sorry, this did not solve problem. Clicked inadvertently. Even though it looks like it is backing up to Air Port Time Capsule, I can't seem to update to anything from High Sierra. Not Catalina, Not Mojave, not Monterey. All have same message, that I can not back up or that Macintosh HD is for back up and thus can not be used. Thank you for your time anyway.
When it asks me which disc to download to and I select Macintosh ish HD it says it is being used as a backup disc (Time Machine). I don’t remember how or when it was selected.
Yes, in Macintosh HD folder (2 of them)
Delete them I'd say, & restart.
Ok thanks, I’ll give it a go.
