I cannot update my MAC OS to the newest version

I tried the system preference and app store to find the update place, but there is no update file to download.

MacBook, macOS 10.12

If you can't see the "Update Now or Upgrade Now" under Software Update on your System Preferences, this means that your Mac is not compatible with the next available update or version.
