iPhone 13 pro max will not pair with apple watch series 1

My iPhone 13 pro max and is unable to pair with my apple watch series 1 - Please could you suggest solutions to this problem please?

Apple watch 1 is very old and will only update to watchos6 and because of their lack of storage space they are proving to be very difficult to pair with ios15.

So is it a definite that it will not link and I should stop wasting any further time on it?
Bizarrely the watch will show as being connected when I look at bluetooth under settings - it just will not pair.

It is possible to pair but it's a long road of trial and error,if it was my watch I think I would retire it and upgrade,there are a lot of good features on newer watches that the series 1 will never be able to enjoy.
This is the apple recommended way to pair your watch but don't expect too much;

I don't want to absorb your time however could you suggest what I should try please?
If after that it still doesn't pair I will take your advice and retire it.
