If you are using a Mac computer, there is a hack to get all duplicates eradicated across all of your Apple devices, provided you are signed into iCloud across all of them.

I’m assuming you are using iCloud to sync your Contacts on iPhone.

  1. On your iPhone, Tap on your Apple ID in Settings, and then tap on iCloud. Make sure your Contacts toggle is switched to on.
  2. This will upload all of your Contacts to iCloud.com, including all the duplicates you have on your phone. Give the syncing sometime.
  3. Go to your Mac and open the Contacts app. Go to Contacts -> Preferences -> Accounts and select your iCloud account to sync with the Contacts app on your Mac.
  4. In a few minutes, all the Contacts including duplicates, will be synced with the Contacts app on your Mac.
  5. Once all Contacts are synced, click on Card from the menu bar of the Mac Contacts app. Click on ‘Look for duplicates’.
  6. The app will look for all duplicates and ask you for permission to Merge them once all are found. Click on ‘Merge’. You have to repeat this process until no duplicates are left.
  7. Once no duplicates are left on the Contacts app in Mac, give it sometime to reverse sync with your iCloud.com Contacts and iPhone Contacts.
  8. Tada…your duplicates are gone!

Cheers!

So if you do the Apple support thing like they recommend it's just perpetual motion. This looks like a problem that's been around for a long time and nobody really knows how to deal with it it seems.

Just to be specific: The problem is that the duplicate contacts only appear on iCloud not on the local hardware platforms.

The posted solution just causes a circular motion through Apple support therefore no solution at all.
