Airpods not working

My airpods will not connect to either my MacBook or iPhone unless I reset them every time. Even when switching airpods from my Mac to my phone I need to forget the device, then reconnect it. I have tried to restart both devices but it will not work. It has become very inconvenient. What do I do?
