Can you wirelessly backup using time machine to a third party storage device such as G-Drive, just like you could with Apples Time Capsule, or will it have to be connected via a cable?

The answer......it depends.

It depends on whether the G-Drive or other drive is capable of connecting to the Wi-Fi network using a wireless connection........and not using a wired connection like USB or Ethernet.

Or

Whether your Wi-Fi router has a USB or Ethernet port to which the D-Drive or other drive would connect......AND.....the port also supports Time Machine backups. Very few routers will do this, among them are Synology and the upper end Asus routers.
