iPadOS 15.2 email - links open in a panel on the left of the email screen instead of in the browser app

Just updated to IPadOS 15.2. Now, whenever a link in an email is tapped, it opens in a panel that slides in from the left of the email screen. How can this be disabled? It's not the least bit helpful, particularly for my senior mother. We need links in emails to open directly in the browser app as was the case before the update. Thank you.

We’re happy to lend a hand so you can help your mom get Mail and tapping on links getting back to what she is used to seeing.


It sounds like Split View has been enabled. Look at Open two items in Split View on iPad for details. Try this, first pull down on the grey grab bar at the top of the Safari view - transforming the view into a split-screen view. The split-screen view has a central divider, upon which is another central grab bar; drag this all the way to the edge of the screen.
