Airpods - both work but only one at a time on MacBook Pro

Both of my airpods work, but only one at a time on MacBook Pro. Both work fine together on iphone 11. I've cleaned the airpods, I've done the forgetting and re-pairing process, and have even rebooted the computer. Any other ideas for a fix?

Have you reset the AirPods?

How to reset your AirPods and AirPods Pro - Apple Support

I assume these AirPods have always been a pair - it’s not like you replaced one of the originals you had.

They have always been a pair; no replacements. I have reset the airpods multiple times, always goes smoothly except the problem still exists. They work fine as a pair on my phone. The left one works fine on its own. They charge fine. It is just somehow the pairing with my computer, which has always worked great until a couple of months ago. Thanks.
