apple watch will not show all apps mode

Apple watch series 4 suddenly has very short battery life (< 90minutes). Will not respond to digital crown to show all apps. Side button will show apps, but will not show grid view, and will reset if I try to exit from the power off / SOS screen. I have unpaired / re-paired twice to try to reset, and phone and watch are both on latest OS. Started happening about a week ago. Watch is basically unusable. Any thoughts of other things to try?
