My mail app has started showing message no mail on screen. Sometimes I can switch between various email accounts and they will show up. Also when I first open the mail app it sometimes shows the messages then they go away and I get the no mail message. When I go to the gmail or yahoo mail app the messages are there.

Delete all the non-icloud accounts then add them back with default settings.

The only thing that I am aware of that stops a non-iCloud account from being deleted is a setting in Screen Time. Turn it off temporarily, and if you take my advice never turn it on again or at least find what is stopping you making account changes.
iCloud email account: If you use the same AppleID then it is ready set up.
Non-iCloud account such as Yahoo or Hotmail:
Settings, Mail, Accounts.
Add or remove accounts as required and ensure only the relevant accounts have "Mail" toggled on.. If you can't add or delete, turn off Screen Time.
