I may be wrong:

Seems there is no way to save groups of Contacts for texts on the iPhone

It can be done on iCloud though, and accessed on iPhone.

Apple support have articles online that may help:

Use other contact accounts on iPhone:

Says:

"Use your iCloud contacts

Go to Settings  > [your name] > iCloud, then turn on Contacts".

"Send a message to a group or business on iPhone":

Says how to "name a group you want to use: (Sorry: Nothing about how to keep a group, after group texts are deleted.)

The photo used for group conversations includes all participants and changes based on who was recently active.

You can also assign a personalized photo to the group conversation.

Tap the name or number at the top of the conversation, select Change Name and Photo, then choose an option.

Says:
