The main difference is that the Apple TV HD cannot output the 4K video signal, only the standard HD (1080P) signal. So if you have a 4K television you will not see 4K content on it. Conversely, if you have a standard HDTV then the Apple TV 4k is overkill that your TV can’t display.


So it depends on what you are planning for the future. If you plan to upgrade to a 4K television then the Apple TV 4K is a must. If you plan to stick with a standard HDTV then the Apple TV HD is all you need.
