Why is my applications folder on my desktop?

My daughter used my laptop, and there is now an 'applications' folder on my desktop, any ideas as to why and how I can remedy this?

It's not there. It's an alias. Look at the lower left on the folder on your desktop. You will see a tiny little arrow.

I just moved mine from the HD folder and found that it was still in the HD folder, and then used get info to find that it was actually an alias. You can delete it.
