old ipad mini

I have an ipad mini that I haven't used for a few years. I tried to set it up again, but it will not let me. I get as far as choose backup, and then it says that my backups are no longer valid for this device. It does not allow me to go further to set up the ipad. How can I make it work?

If your backup cannot be used to restore the iPad, you have no alternative other than to set-up your iPad again “as new” - without benefit of restoring your data. If you use the same AppleID, any data synchronised with iPad may still be re-synchronised with your iPad.
