How do I get the ethernet cable from the router to my MacBook to work?

What do I need to do to use an ethernet connection? I have a cable from the router to my MacBook Air (with an adapter). What's next?

Using Ethernet:

  1. Go to: System Preferences
  2. Select: Network
  3. Select: the ethernet connection on the left
  4. Click: Connect button
