My Mac using OS X El Capitan. Unable to perform software update.

My Mac is using OS X El Capitan. When attempting to do a software update, in the App Store it says that it is "up to date". Please assist.

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and depending on which MacBook model you have, click on High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, or Big Sur. It needs to be at least a late 2009 one to run a newer OS.
