I just received an email from Apple support that my account is going to be locked if I don’t update my information I want to do so and it’s asking me for my Social Security number why does apple need this.

I just purchased a new phone replacing my 6S

That sounds like a scam message. Apple would not ask for your social security number. Was it really from Apple support? Did it address you by name or just ‘Dear Customer’?
