I have a Mac desktop that I want to erase and restore the factory settings. but every effort I have made have ended in failure. I know that there is a way to erase my information and start over but I've been unsuccessful.

I have a 2009 iMac OS X 10.6.8 that I want to dispose of but cannot find a way to erase the hard disk. I have tried every method I can find but none get me beyond another startup. Do I just have to smash this beautiful but totally out of date iMac?
