Can I use the Thunderbolt one port on my iMac or the older mini-desply port?

Your only other option would be to use either Luna Display or Duet Display 3rd party software to make this work. I'm currently using Duet Display to use a 2012 27" iMac as a second display to a 2020 27" iMac. Acceptable for most purposes.

This Apple article shows the limited hardware and software requirements for the now-deprecated Target Display Mode:

Apple began the deprecation in Late 2014 and threw the last shovel of dirt in its face in early 2020. Many internet "sources," lacking editorial assistance or research skills, are attributing miracles to a dead technology. Ain't so.
Don't think that is correct. Saw u tubers use apple adapter to do the hook-up without resorting to software.
Not sure if Thunderbolt 2 adopter is backward compatible with the TB 1 port in the Mid-2011 iMac.
Will look into Luna. That could be the best advice.

Target Display Mode will NOT work, and all other options, such as "Luna Display", provide a poor experience.
It is much better (and more cost effective) to buy an external display. It will also use much less power.

MacOS Big Sur does not support the old Target Display mode protocols.
