What Apple Pencil do you have?

Make sure you are updated to the most recent version of iPadOS (iPadOS 15.0.1). If it is an Apple Pencil 2 generation, it should connect when you place it on the side.

Depending on your iPad model, it would either be connected via the charging port, or on the top of the device. (If held in landscape mode)
