Start up issues

Hi, when I start up my MacBook Air I am getting a persistent flashing question mark folder. I tried pressing command R like instructed to no avail. I am not sure where to go from here.

That means cannot find the OS. You will probably have to start up in recovery mode and reinstall the OS.
