Hi. I have an older Mac with OS X El Capitan 10.11.6. Today I started to get the message, "Your connection is not private..." when attempting to open most websites that I was able to open just yesterday. Same problem is occurring with both Safari and Chrome. Any suggestions? I cannot afford a new computer. Thanks.

If your Mac supports it, you will want to upgrade to macOS 10.13 High Sierra, or newer.

Have a backup created before the upgrade.
Use Safari to download the upgrade kit.
If you are not sure about upgrades, use 🍎 > About This Mac, and post the Mac model and Mac model year. With both the Mac model and the Mac model year both and we do need both the model and the year, we can look up your upgrade options. If this is the MacBook Pro shown in the footer, which year?
If you cannot upgrade to a newer macOS version, you will will then have to retrofit some certificates.
The following directions—I lack any way to test these—look reasonable for retrofitting a certificate on OS X 10.11 or earlier.

Thank you, however, I cannot upgrade to anything higher than OS X El Capitan because my computer does not support it (it's older). I cannot even access the link you send for certification because I get the same message that "connection is not secure." Any other suggestions? I appreciate it.
Some other suggestions? Switch the HTTPS to HTTP in the URL, or use a different computer to read the link, or download and use a different browser with its own certificate chain and not Safari, or install and use Linux, among other options.
This worked for me, after weeks of not being able to access some 50% of websites.
