Stolen AirPods

My AirPods were stolen from me 4 days ago. When I first noticed they were gone, I went onto Find My Devices, and it stated their location and the last time I used them. 2 days ago, I checked again and it said no current location. I checked Find My Devices once again about an hour ago and a location and time were given.

I'm confused because I thought it only displays their location when the AirPods are connected to one of my own devices, but I have not seen them in 4 days.

Can you explain why this happened or if I am wrong about how their location is displayed?
