When I close apple music on mac part way through a playlist and then relaunch apple music won't restart on where I was before closing it. Apple music doesn't seem to retain my playback history and just opens on the home screen.

The Music predecessor, iTunes, never had that ability either.
Instead of closing Music, just pause the play and minimize the window. When you reopen it, it will pick up where it was.
