unable to drag and drop mp3 into iTunes

I'm having a problem dragging and dropping mp3s into iTunes. I've had no problem in the past and have not updated my settings in any weird way. Whenever I drag an mp3 into iTunes a red square appears around the whole library and does not allow me to drop it in. Opening the mp3 in iTunes any other way doesn't work either.
