In the past, I have been dragging MP3s from my desktop to iTunes and they import just fine. I can then rename and add info to them.
But today, I am suddenly unable to do this. I drag, get the green + sign, release, but they don't get added. I did just allow an update for this: https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT212825 so maybe that affected it.
Has anyone else had this issue? I am running OS Big Sur 11.6.

Not true. I have been able to add mp3 files without any problems.
Drag and drop, double clicking, using automatically add to music folder, selecting track open with… and selecting import from main menu all work. Import music from a computer to Music on Mac - Apple Support

Thanks for your reply but "not true" doesn't help those of us who were successfully using all the methods you outline in previous macOS .. but no longer can using BigSur 11.6.
I've been having this same problem. I think the Music app is no longer accepting MP3s. I redownloaded all my music as M4As and I can now import them with no problem.

Apple music accepts valid mp3.
