What does the hardware warranty cover? Does it cover a cracked screen?

No. Apple standard one year warranty does not cover accidental damage. If you didn't purchase AppleCare+ when you purchased your phone, a screen replacement (do NOT let anyone other than Apple or Apple Authorized Service Providers replace your screen - otherwise you will NOT get an authentic screen and it will cause some things to NOT work on your iPhone) will cost you $279.
