Desktop items reorganized after update

After my last update (I currently have Big Sur version 11.5.2) the files I keep on my desktop are now organized in groups - like screen shots, images, pdf files. I have to click on the category to find my files....and I can't keep them in the places I had them on my desktop anymore, they just go right back to the upper right corner in these categories. I had gotten used to having the files I needed in certain places to access easily, and while I know it seems more organized and clean, it takes longer to find what I need quickly. I've tried googling this to see if I can undo it or change a preference somehow so it's not organized this way anymore but I can't find anything. Has anyone run into this?
