Boot into Internet Recovery (Option Command R) and from the dropdown menu: Utilities>  Disk Utility> run the First Aid on your Macintosh HD (and the "Macintosh HD-Data" volume as well if Catalina/Big Sur) If errors are found and repaired, run again until no errors reported.

Disk Utility>View>Show All Devices The best sequence is —

• Volume level
• Container level
• Parent drive

You can always force quit the Mac if it is frozen.

Hold the power button/TouchID for ~6-10 secs to force a shutdown.

Log out, sleep, wake, restart, or shut down your Mac - Apple ...

Reboot as normal and see where this leaves you.

In addition to what leroydouglas said, yes, boot into recovery mode, run Disk Utilities Disk First aid on all 3 parts of your disk (volume, container, parent disk) until no errors are found, but additionally, after doing all of this, you may also wish to then click 'resinstall macOS', as that should not only reinstall some parts of the macOS that may be malfunctioning (even if the disk is OK and didn't need repairs, there could still be a part of the macOS that is corrupted and/or malfunctioning), and by running the reinstall of macOS, it should also provide you automatically with the latest version of your current macOS.

Afterwards, although you'll probably have _most_ of all the macOS updates applicable for your version of macOS, you can double check if there are any further updates that you may wish to install and then safely install them.
